Seven Lakes Basin Hike - Day 2

Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3

On the trail the next morning in stellar weather. We awoke to blue skies in contrast to the gloomy weather prediction.

Fungus amongus.

Part way up the climb to the high divide on Day 2. Max in the foreground, Evan in the rear, taking one of many breaks.

Rob and Nick approaching.

Heart lake. It really is shaped like a heart! We thought about having lunch here, but fortunately (see lunch pics) decided to press on for higher ground with views.

Looking back down the valley that lead up to Heart lake.

Lunch on the High Divide overlooking Mount Olympus in the background with its incredible glaciers. The Hoh river valley below.

Telephoto view of the glaciers on Mount Olympus.

Happy lunch eaters.

Mount Olympus again.

Further west on the High Divide, looking down into the Seven Lakes Basin area.

The Seven Lakes Basin area.

Max and Evan at trailside on the High Divide.

The group looking down into the Seven Lakes Basin.

One of the seven lakes with some nice ramparts in the background.

The High Divide trail was at the top of a ridge. Mount Olympus to the south, the Seven Lakes Basin to the North. Awesome views wherever you looked.

Rob, laden with gear.

More lakes.

Rob consulting the map.

Nick in the foreground, Max and Evan behind.

Nick, Evan and Max with Mount Olympus in the background.

Evan leading the way to the high point near Bogachiel Peak.

Snow at last! The boys were really happy to see this.

Fun to make a snowball in August.

Evan in the snow. Note the lack of shoes.

The boys on the rocks near Bogachiel Peak.

Mount Olympus with the Hoh river below.

Rob and Dan. Dan probably wishes he had his sunglasses on at this point.

More lakes in the Basin.

On the north side of the High Divide approaching the cutoff to Hoh Lake.

The cutoff to Hoh Lake visible above the distant talus slope. Our group visible on the trail at the right.

At the intersection where the trail to Hoh Lake cuts off. The trail is on top of a saddle between two high points.

Looking down into the upper Bogachiel River valley.

Looking back at the above mentioned saddle with Mount Olympus and glaciers in the background.

Leaving the High Divide, now heading to Potholes, our campsite for the night.

A last look into the Seven Lakes Basin.

Descending to Potholes.

Rob with Devil's Paintbrush flowers in the foreground.

An amazing series of switchbacks.

The trail after Bogachiel peak clung to the side of a steep mountainside for quite a way, crossing talus slopes now and then.

More Devil's Paintbrushes.

Pink ones too.

The boys in an eerie looking clump of trees.

Went too far, almost passing the Potholes campsite since it wasn't marked.

Rob behind our tents at Potholes.

Second and last night on the trail.
