I rode this stretch a few years ago with a friend and remember it being very twisty (in parts at least) and at the same time having fantastic geology. High red cliffs on the east side of the road. Deep canyon on the west. Little to no traffic. It is as I remembered it. Well worth riding. North of Gateway the Rte 141 becomes straighter, but the mesas on each side of the road are spectacular.
I camped at Caddis Flats Campground on the San Miguel River. The river was deep enough for a bath, though chilly. Fly fisherman were trying their luck while I was there. Beautiful river. From my campsite heading north, the road is twisty and surrounded by red cliffs and forests. Then up the long, Norwood Hill and onto straight, flat farm roads. After passing Naturita the road gets twisty up to Gateway. Gas up there, then return to camp.
