Crossing Grand Creek on the morning of day 3. This marks the beginning of the ascent up to the ridge between Obstruction Peak and Deer park. It's another 2,400 (approx) ascent. We had 10.3 miles to go this day.
Paul in a meadow.
Pretty flowers.
Pretty flowers.
Heading up Grand Creek, this sign marks the intersection for the cutoff route towards Deer Park.
This picture shows the other (high) route from Grand Lake to Obstruction Peak.
There's no water source on the ridge trail between Obstruction Peak and Deer Park, so we stocked up on water at this stream on the way up.
Max and Michael pumping water with a filter.
Pretty flowers by the stream.
The boys in the distance on the way up to the ridge.
Looking back down on the way up to the ridge.
Looking down into Grand Valley, and back up to Grand Pass.
Us at the ridge. There were plenty of day hikers on the ridge, so we didn't need a timer for a group portrait.
I thought I read somewhere that the ridge trail between Obstruction Peak and Deer Park was mostly level. Someone also told us it was all in the sun. Neither is true. There's a lot of downhill on the way to Deer Park, and some uphill. The last couple of miles at the east end is in the forest.
Looking north towards the Straits of Juan de Fuca.
Looking east towards Seattle.
The end, only a few miles away. Paul is in the foreground.
