Cooper Lake Campout

During the summer of 2005 my friend Rob and I planned a camping trip where we'd take boats to Lake Ozette in the Olympic National Park, and camp on an island a few miles south of the boat launch ramp. Well the weather turned bad to the west, so we decided to head east over the pass in the Cascades and camp out at Cooper Lake in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area. The weather was indeed very nice there and we had a great time. Did a lot of fishing and spent a lot of time playing with the Trimaran. The total weight capacity of the canoe is 850 pounds, but with the amas I'm guessing that the trimaran can easily hold 1,200 pounds or more. It has plenty of room for gear and people, so it makes a very excellent camping boat. We sailed around with three adults and three kids in it just fine. Saturday afternoon the westerly wind came up and stayed at about 17 or 18 mph for a while. I went out alone in the trimaran and planed back and forth across the lake at really high speeds. That was a blast.

The trimaran beached at our campsite.

Snowcapped mountains to the west on Saturday morning.

Max balancing near an ama, mid-lake.

We sailed up the headwaters and beached at a sandbar to play.

Evan jumping off a log.

And wading back to shore around the boat.

And again.

Beached on the south shore, looking west.

We towed Evan across the lake.

Nick paddling up the headwaters.

Max paddling. The water is incredibly clear here.

He-men hamming it up.

Packed up to leave.

On the way back to the boat launch ramp. Next time, Lake Ozette.
