Breakfast at Harris Ranch
After making a beeline for the community pool in Bakersfield I swam laps. What a great pool! Totally worth the $5 it cost which included a much needed hot shower. The pool is outdoors and it was raining lightly. I asked a lifeguard if there's any weather that would make them close the pool. Only lightning she said.

Great seeing Dave again He's 74. His wife died a few months ago and he's had some health problems, so his son Charles (aka Bubba) is staying with him for a while. He was in good spirits though and is recovering health-wise.

Dave told me that there were a few Basque restaurants in Bakersfield. Not having eaten Basque food I made sure to pack my genuine Basque beret. They're bigger than normal ones. The Pyrenees Restaurant where we ate was wonderful. The moment I walked in, a nice younger guy walked right up and said he liked my hat and started speaking French! He goes by Papillon. For dinners, they have a "set up" which included:
Bread and salsa
An interesting salad
Pickled tongue
Cabbage soup
Penne pasta with tomato sauce
French fries
Green beans with spices and sauce
You can get just that, or an entree too. Lamb shank for me, garlic chicken for Dave. Everything was delicious, surprisingly the tongue was Dave's and my favorite. Scenes from the Pyrenees.
We'll leave for the Salton Sea around noon today. Having coffee in my van now. Won't be able to email until a day or so after arriving in La Ventana. So until then, adios!
