WA, OR, ID, MT Motorcycle Trip - June 16-19, 2007

Home | Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4

After a mind numbing drive down Interstate I-84 from Baker City to Boise, we grabbed lunch at a Subway to take to the hot springs and headed up Rte. 21 and the town of Lowman. Lots of traffic due to it being a Sunday, but most of it was coming down the mountain while we were going up.

Excellent pavement on Rte. 21.

This blurry, zoomed in picture shows Rte 21. cut into the sides of the hill as it winds on down. Nice linked turns.

Yet another set of linked curves on Rte. 21.

Pine Flat hot springs. The hot water flows down this cliff face. Pools at the bottom were only warm, but we found a very hot pool up the cliff.

Hot water flowing over the cliff, with funky orange (plant or animal?) growth on the rocks.

Dave soaking. Having owned a hot tub, I guess that the water temperature was at least 105 degrees.

The parking area at the trailhead to the hot springs. Parking was $3.

A picture of Dave taking a picture of the Sawtooth mountains.

Burned trees made for a surreal landscape at this ascent to a pass.

The road winding up into the burned forest. Nice banked turns.

The Sawtooth mountains, nearing Stanley.

Another view of the Sawtooths.

Same again.

Same again.

Heading up a pass somewhere near Stanley.

The road turns right before hitting this big rock, somewhere near Challis, Idaho.

Green painted hills in the distance. "Painted hills" are actually a type of expansive clay in granular form, with each piece about as big as a golf ball. Various minerals impart different colors ranging between green, red, orange, yellow, purple, black and white. Eastern Oregon has some spectacular examples of this near the John Day River.

This red rock wall along the west side of Rte. 93 near Challis was pretty neat.

Dramatic mountains along Rte. 93. This geological stuff was fun to see.

Entering a big canyon on Rte. 93.

Dave enjoying a sweeper.

The Stagecoach Inn in Salmon, Idaho. Our second night's stop. Great place, right on the Salmon River. They had a special, safe place to park your bikes, and bucket of rags just for motorcyclists to wipe their bikes down. The restaurant a block to the north was great.

Dave using the valet cart to schlepp all our stuff up to the room.

The view out of our motel room, overlooking the Salmon River. Can't get much closer.
