After waking, we decided to spend the day getting to and hiking around the other side of Lauterbrunnen valley near Wengen. Walked 50 minutes to Murren from our hostel in Gimmelwald. It's a 50 minute uphill hike there and a 30 minute downhill hike back. Shopped for breakfast stuff at the Coop store and ate it while I had coffee at a restaurant. Loaded up our daypack with lunch supplies and bought tickets for the journey. Max got a 20 Franc pass good for all cable cars and trains until he's 16. My one way trip to Mannlichen cost 30 Francs.

Grass cutting on a really steep hill side. Makes mowing the lawn at home seem pretty easy.

Entering the town of Murren.

Took the train to Grutschalp, then a cable car down to Lauterbrunnen. Saw paragliders skirting the cliff on our way down. Then a cog train to Wengen and finally a cable car to Mannlichen. Pretty fun.

Looking across Lauterbrunnen valley to the east at Monk and Jungfrau.

Machinery for loading and offloading cargo at the top of the cable car that leads down to Lauterbrunnen.

Another view down.

Paragliders skirt the cliff on the west wall of Lauterbrunnen valley.

Starting up the hill to Wengen on the cog train.

Looking back down at Lauterbrunnen valley from the cog train to Wengen.

Avalanche fences at the top of the mountain above the cable car station. Makes you think.

Looking back down at Wengen.

Spectacular views of Eiger, Monk and Jungfrau from up there. We walked the "Panorama weg" to Kleine Scheidegg. Nice wide smooth trail so you could look at the mountains while walking instead of down at your feet on a tricky trail. Plenty of tourists, but that was ok given our experience during the last two days. Nice view of the north side of Eiger. Picnic lunch while looking at the mountains, coffee at a restaurant, then began the hike down to Wengen. Read a sign showing the various routes up the Eiger that different climbers have done.

Starting out on the Panorama Weg from Mannlichen. Eiger mountain ahead on the left.

Panorama Weg. A lovely trail.

Only moderate numbers of tourists on the Panorama Weg.

Tidy, colorful little cog trains.

We visually followed a few paraglider pilots while hiking down to Wengen. Easy to watch them work the ridge and thermal lift. Looked like lots of fun. Had snacks in Wengen and window shopped the sporting goods stores. The Europeans all seem to hike with an odd size pack. Bigger than what we think of as a day pack and smaller than a full size back pack. I bought a ticket back to Murren and we cog trained and cable car'd our way back there.

I want one of these.

Bought tortellini, sauce and salad fixings for dinner. Cooked in the hostel kitchen and ate too much. Only 34 Francs though. Would probably have been 70 in a restaurant. Funny signs in the kitchen telling you to clean up. Internet session that evening and then to bed.
